Colocasia affinis 'Jenningsii'

id: some material under this name is really C. esculenta var. antiquorum 'Illustris' which differs
id: in lacking a clearly defined central silver shield. 'Jenningsii' has green veins
id: distinctly reaching to the margin while 'Illustris' is often darker green near
id: the margins.

Norfolk Botanical Garden, VA USA. August 2003. These plants are less black than some we've seen but this rich reddish-purple look is very effective. Note the reddish
veins on the backs of some of the leaves. This name is now being used for the glossy clone with burgundy stems and not the matte-finished one, now called 'Miranda'

ns: but we have seen the common name "Cranberry Taro" used for a species

Colocasia esculenta var. antiquorum 'Fontanesii' (C. fontanesii)

ht: 80 in.
st, pet: purplish black to black, sometimes reddish-purple  - variable with growing conditions and thus numerous names have been used.
ll: to 36 in.
lc: glossy green. Some leaves are lightly purple tinged but never to the extent of 'Black Magic'. They often have dark red to purplish veins, especially below.
lc: overall it appears to be a green-leaved plant except in the petioles.
ns: Graf assigns this cultivar to C. antiquorum which is now regarded as variety of C. esculenta. He lists it from Ceylon.
ns: we note that the 1988 Glasshouse Works Catalog (page 18) describes it as having leaves that are glaucous blue-green. This suggests their
ns: clone could have been what is now called 'Miranda' today (see below). 'Fontanesii' is used here for the glossy green clone while the
ns: glaucous, matte-finished clone has been separated under the name 'Miranda'.

lc: bright green, 70-95% suffused and mottled dusky purple, much greener on the margins. Midrib and secondary veins are mostly green and
lc: give good contrast. Greyish-green below. Leaves are highly variable in the amount of illustration, especially with some having more
lc: green on the margins than others. It been called the "black Caladium" though it's not in that genus.
ns: var. antiquorum is considered to be the Japanese variety of this high variable species.
