North Carolina Botanical Garden, Chapel Hill NC.  May 2003. This species native to the SE US states is new to us and quite appealing as an ornamental. The floriferousness combined with the lavender-white corollas is quite amazing even compared to modern hybrids. The big plus for this taxon is that it blooms WEEKS BEFORE the major hybrids and much before 'Husker Red' for example.

ht:: 15-18 in. The plants photographed above at Lewis Ginter were easily 30 in. tall
fc: scarlet red by literature. All the plants we have seen are actually a light orange-red and closer to a vermillion-red blend. It is nice refreshing color and one that is not too bright nor overpowering.
lu: needs a mass planting and one closely spaced. The flowers are often widely spaced on the inflorescence and one needs a large blast of them to get a full effect.
